Donating to a charity is not something many of us do on a regular basis. Sure, there are tax benefits in the United States to doing so, but it’s hard to come up with extra money to donate. One great way to donate a little without having to get money from your already thin wallet is to recycle things you already have and maybe throw away, such as cartridges for your printer. There are many places where you can recycle inkjet cartridges for free or even get a small discount on future cartridge purchases, but it’s just as easy to donate them to a charity.

Recycle 4 Charity is an organization based in California that will gladly accept your empty cartridges and donate the proceeds to a charity of your choice. Like many other organizations, they will provide you with pre-paid shipping materials and you can send as many cartridges as you want. You can opt to donate the cartridges, in which 10% of their gross profits will be donated to charities, or receive money back that you can use for whatever you want, including donating to a charity yourself. Depending on the cartridge, they will pay anywhere between $0.10 and $3.00 for each, though most seem to be $0.20 or $0.45. That doesn’t seem like much, but if you were going to throw the cartridges away or recycle them for free, at least that little bit is helping someone, right? The company also offers various boxes, baggies, and recycling containers that you can set up in your school, church, or workplace and maybe get more people involved in recycling and donating.

Think about the large amount of plastic that the average household throws away on a daily basis. Plastic recycling is increasing, yet most plastic is recycled during manufacturing of the containers; not as post-consumer recycling. For example, trimmings from plastic bottles are reground and reprocessed into new ones. Plastic recycling is expensive. The materials are very light, making transport costs per tonne very high.

Plastic recycling is more complicated, but using recycled rather than new plastic can save on average two tonnes of CO2. Furthermore, plastic can be recycled over and over again. Plastic recycling is unlikely to be adversely affected by PLA, which can’t currently be processed by mainstream recyclers, until it makes up a far greater percentage of plastic than it does now. The best option would be to develop a separate recycling stream for PLA. Plastic recycling is carring out mechanically in Tehran. However, this simple method is not scientifically approved for collection, separation, recycling process and products generation.

Recycling paper is the process of taking waste paper, or paper that would otherwise be thrown out, and remaking it into new paper products. Paper that can be used to make recycled paper is broken down into three categories- mill broke, pre-consumer waste, and post-consumer waste. Mill broke paper is paper that becomes scrap during the manufacturing of paper and it is recycled right in the paper mill. Pre-consumer paper waste is papers that were discarded before consumer use. Post-consumer paper waste is papers that were discarded by the consumer after use. Paper that is used in recycling is called scrap paper.

75% of obsolete computers are just lying around

A study conducted by National Safety Council has found that almost 75% of the computers purchased by corporations, companies and individuals are lying obsolete in some attic, garage or store room. They are disposed of and are not being recycled. Many people aren’t aware of the hazards of disposal in land fills.

Many people don’t recycle or give away obsolete computers to since the resale value isn’t great for outdate, obsolete computers. However, if one isn’t looking to sell their computers or trade them for upgraded versions, then they should recycle them or donate them and to charitable organizations.
